Message from the Director

It’s the beginning of the new year 2018, and what an exciting year it promises to be. The staff and faculty at the Tulane PRC are looking forward to a lot of interaction with our community organizations, partners and associates. Being well into the fourth year of our five-year funding cycle, we have a lot of work to do, and with the community’s help, it will get done.
But I think it is important to remember, especially at the beginning of a new year, that the Tulane PRC continues to promote walking, a wonderful physical activity for all of us – no matter what age we are. Let’s review some of the reasons why:

1) You don’t have to go to a special place to walk – just about anywhere will do, as long as you stay safe from traffic and unusual ground obstacles. You can even walk in place or through the rooms in your home – so convenient.
2) You don’t need special clothes or equipment – just about anything will do, although a good pair of walking shoes is highly recommended – so comfortable.
3) You don’t have to walk an hour at a time – just 10 to 15 minutes a few times a day will give you the recommended amount of physical activity – so easy.
4) You can accrue incredible health benefits because walking helps prevent or ameliorate chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. – so healthy.
5) You can improve your thinking and emotions because walking can contribute to cognitive acuity and help reduce emotional issues, such as anxiety and depression – so relaxing.

Well, now we are going to add a sixth reason. According to the Prevention Guide, Jan/Feb 2018, a walking plan can help combat aging! Yep, studies are showing that “just a few minutes of walking each day can add years to your life.” Well, if that doesn’t interest you, I don’t know what will. According to the Prevention Guide, a “study published in the journal, PLOS Medicine, walking for 11 minutes a day is enough to extend your life span by 2 years.” Looking forward to additional quality years of healthy living is a great goal for 2018 and a great time to start. The Prevention Guide, which can be picked up in your supermarket, lays out some walking plans, healthy eating recipes, and even some flat-belly stretches that can add years to your life.

Bunny Friend Neighborhood Association (February 16th, 2019) On February 16th, the Bunny Friend Neighborhood Association hosted a green infrastructure workshop in partnership with Water Wise Gulf South at St. Mary of the Angel’s Church.
