Active Steps: Staying Fit through the Holidays

Although physical activity is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the holiday season, it is actually an ideal time to be active! Staying active is important during this time of year to help maintain body weight as well as help keep blood sugars stabilized from decadent foods. Being active can be a great form of stress relief from all the time spent with family or busy shopping malls. While this time of year certainly calls for some traditional events, there is always room to keep moving. Time with family and friends can be made even better by incorporating some physical activity.

Here are some ideas to help get inspired to stay fit during the holidays
New Orleans and other towns and cities are filled with activities that can be explored and enjoyed with family and friends that will keep the body moving. Here are some tips for people in the Big Easy:
-Walk around the French Quarter and look at all the decorations
-Explore the Celebration in the Oaks in City Park and admire the magnificent trees lit up
-Stroll around the neighborhood singing holiday carols

Another way to stay active is to cook at home
Make a trip to the grocery story with the family to find items together to make a healthy meal to be enjoyed together and off the couch. Get the whole family to help out by:
-Chopping up veggies
-Mixing a salad together
-Stirring a bowl of hot soup

Last but certainly not least is shopping!
Shopping is one of the main activities done throughout December and can definitely be a great form of staying active. Although it can be tempting to do online shopping at home, shopping at the mall can be a wonderful way to stay moving:
-Walk around stores and markets looking for gifts
-Park farther from the entrance for extra steps
-Take the stairs instead of the elevator
-Bonus points for holding onto heavy shopping bags!

Make a goal of being active at least 30 minutes a day to keep fit this time a year. Small changes can be made that can get in more activity and keep up with fitness!
