Active Steps: Maintain a Healthy Workout Schedule

Now that summer is winding down, schedules are beginning to fill up. You may suddenly be finding it hard to fit exercise into your schedule. Instead of skipping your workout, consider following a few of these tips to stay active throughout the day.

Workout with a Friend
Ask a friend to come running with you or to an exercise class. Not only will you motivate each other, but you will help hold each other accountable and not skip a session. In fact, research conducted by the Tulane Prevention Research Center showed that people were more likely to meet the recommended physical activity levels when they were encouraged by friends!

Set Your Alarm Early
Morning workouts can be a great way to start your day. Increased energy and reduced food cravings are just some of the benefits of morning exercise. Not good at waking up? Try sleeping in your workout gear and have your gym bag packed. Being ready to go will give you less reasons to hit snooze.

Be Active with Your Commute
Being stuck in traffic is never fun. Consider biking or walking to work or class once or twice a week. A recent study conducted in England found that being active in your commute can improve your wellbeing. If your commute is too far to bike, park your car farther away, or get off the bus or streetcar a few stops earlier and walk the rest of the way to your destination.

Become a Lunchtime Exerciser
If morning exercise does not work for you, take advantage of your lunch break and workout! According to an article in Science Daily, finding time to exercise during work hours can increase productivity.

Workout at Your Desk
Some days are too hectic to fit in a lunch break. Find five minutes at your desk to try a yoga pose (or two) to help relieve tension. Check out our previous Active Steps article for more information on five easy yoga poses you can do at work.

Schedule Your Workout
Block off time in your schedule to workout. The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission has a variety of options all over the city, from fitness equipment and exercise classes to dance classes and sports for all ages. The Reily Center at Tulane offers a number of free or reduced priced exercise classes for members of the Tulane community at varying times throughout the day. Find one that fits with your schedule and sign up.
