30th Anniversary: Tulane PRC supports school-based nutrition and garden education

Students supported by Edible Schoolyard New Orleans programming are eating more fruits and vegetables than the national average, according to a 2013-14 report by the Tulane Prevention Research Center (PRC). ESYNOLA has been integrating hands-on organic gardening and seasonal cooking into FirstLine Charter school curriculum, culture, and cafeteria programs in New Orleans since 2006.

Over the past few years, the Tulane PRC has partnered with ESYNOLA through program evaluation and graduate student intern placement in 300-hour practicum experiences. This partnership has fostered not only an increase in capacity but also the ability to improve program data collection and analysis.

“(Tulane PRC intern placements) have increased our capacity to work on curriculum and program development by fine-tuning things like program goals and objectives as well as evaluation methods,” said Claudia Barker, Executive Director of Edible Schoolyard New Orleans.

Currently, Tulane PRC is partnering with ESYNOLA to conduct a 2015-16 school report, similar to the one conducted during the 2013-14 school year.

“This year’s report will help us identify areas that demonstrate clear knowledge and behavioral changes, and will bring clarity about other areas that need our attention and prioritization,” Barker commented.

During the Annual Farm to Table International Symposium in August 2015, Adrienne Mundorf, Tulane PRC Program Manager, presented with Kerrie Partridge, ESYNOLA Program Director, on the impact of food literacy, gardening, and cooking education on students in New Orleans.

The overall goal of the partnership between Tulane PRC and ESYNOLA is to increase impact on student eating habits and knowledge. Through program evaluation and practicum placements, ESYNOLA has increased capacity and improved evaluation tools to be used continuously in the future.
