New Orleans Eat Local Challenge adds health-focused series of events

Can you go 30 days on an all-local diet? Want to get into better shape? The Prevention Research Center (PRC) at Tulane University is joining dozens of local organizations, businesses and food growers in challenging New Orleans residents to live healthier and eat only foods grown, raised or caught within 200 miles of the city.

The fifth annual Eat Local Challenge runs through June and the Tulane PRC is proud to be one of the many challenge sponsors.

New to this year's challenge is a special series of health-focused events, cooking demonstrations, tours, nutrition resources and fitness challenges designed to motivate participants to eat healthier and be more active. As part of this special series, the Tulane PRC plans to host a screening of HBO's documentary "Weight of the Nation" to showcase the connections between food systems, diet and health.
The challenge not only recognizes the health benefits of eating fresh foods, but also the environmental and economic impact of buying locally sourced foods.

Ten years after Hurricane Katrina, the rapid growth of the New Orleans' local foods movement is a reflection of the spirit of reinvestment in New Orleans and a confirmation the high value placed on their unique agricultural and seafood resources. Dozens of restaurants have signed up for the challenge and have agreed to offer dishes made of local ingredients on their menus. Eat Local Challenge participants will also receive coupons and perks at local businesses around the New Orleans area.
